Can French or Jumbo Guineas Fly?
They can if you kick them hard enough. Haha. While that may be true it's also true that French guineas (also called Jumbo guineas) can most certainly fly! They will not be catching updrafts over mountain ranges with eagles but they can fly well for 500 yards or so which means they will be roosting in trees and on barns and even cars if they feel so inclined.
Some folks claim that French guineas are too heavy to fly but that's a bunch of poppycock. Yes, French guineas are about 2 pounds heavier than the common guinea fowl but they can still fly. Granted, the common guinea variety may be more agile but French guineas are still quite capable of flying.
If you don't want your guinea hens to fly, we do offer pinioning on our day old guinea keets (order our keets by clicking here). If you are going to free range your fowl, we do not suggest pinioning since it also hampers their ability to escape from predators.
